Drinking Coffee Daily Might Lower Your Risk for Liver Cirrhosis
A new study published in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, suggests drinking coffee daily might lower your risk for liver cirrhosis.
The study was performed on both men and women – 500,000 in total – spanning from six countries. It was conducted by researchers at the University of Southampton in the UK.
In conclusion, they discovered the more coffee consumed per day meant a lower risk of developing liver cirrhosis. The study also discovered coffee has beneficial ingredients containing “oxidative and anti-inflammatory agents, such as chlorogenic acid, kahweol and cafestol” which can protest us against damaging our livers.
As Medical News Today reports, the lead author of the study, Dr. O.J. Kennedy of the university’s Faculty of Medicine, concluded, “Coffee appeared to protect against cirrhosis. This could be an important finding for patients at risk of cirrhosis to help to improve their health outcomes. However, we now need robust clinical trials to investigate the wider benefits and harms of coffee so that doctors can make specific recommendations to patients.”
Liver cirrhosis affects 0.27 percent of Americans, and incredibly, 69 percent don’t know they have it. This is a chilling statistic considering the disease can be fatal if undiagnosed because it can lead to liver failure and cancer.
Coffee is so beneficial when it comes to preventing liver cirrhosis, in fact, that consuming two more cups a day lowers our risk of getting the disease by 44 percent, with a 50 percent lower risk of dying from it.
