Studies Proving Coffee’s Health Benefits On The Rise
Studies have been increasingly proving the health benefits coffee can provide in a variety of ways, including cancer prevention, decreased diabetes risk, chronic pain and overall psychological well-being. Researchers have started to focus on these health benefits associated with coffee in recent years, which is great news for coffee drinkers around the world.
As a coffee service provider, offering companies great tasting coffee is rewarding, but the possibility of giving them added health benefits is even better. One of those health benefits is lowering the risk of suicide and depression based on caffeine boosting neurotransmitters in the brain such as serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline. Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health gathered information from three studies to find drinking two to four cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of suicide in both men and women by about 50 percent.
Another health benefit coffee provides is reducing chronic pain. In fact, a study conducted by researchers at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Boston Children’s Hospital found that caffeine blocked pain hypersensitivity in tired lab mice. The tired lab mice were given painkillers, coffee and more sleep, which resulted in researchers finding that getting more sleep and consuming caffeine to promote wakefulness alleviated pain more than taking pain killers.
The decrease in risk of diabetes is another health benefit associated with coffee. Studies have shown those who drink four or more cups of coffee a day have a 50 percent lower risk of type 2 diabetes. In a study funded by the National Basic Research Program of China and the Natural Science Foundation of China, it was found that caffeine, caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid aid in blocking the toxic build-up of a protein that’s associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Another study that supports coffee’s many health benefits is published in the International Journal of Cancer, which proves its connection to cancer prevention. The study showed men who drank three cups of coffee or more a day had a 53 percent decreased risk of prostate cancer.
